Disease Information) Why do we Test the Patella
on our
Schipperkes? Because we think that part of
being responsible breeders is
keeping ourselves
informed on advances in the fields of dog health
&
genetics and using available tests to carefully
screen all breeding stock
to help us have the
healthiest puppies possible. Luxating Patella...
also
called slipping stifles or slipping kneecaps
... this problem is considered
hereditary in
Schipperkes and was the most-often reported
Orthopedic
problem on the Schipperke's AKC
National Breed Clubs Health Survey. All
schips
used for breeding or performance events should be
checked for this.
Dogs with normal patella can be
certified through the OFA's Patellar
Registry.
Dogs with luxating patella are graded 1 through 4,
dogs with low
grade LP (1) often don't need
surgery, higher grades (2-4) usually do...
and
surgery is expensive, and it is painful for the
dog. I would not
recommend using a dog with any
grade of LP in performance events. Puppies
whose
parents have had their Patella tested Normal of
course have a much
better chance of never having
Patella problems themselves. It costs
$7.50 to
register a dogs Patella results with the
OFA..Please note we
