We are expecting puppies out of AKC Champion and Health Tested Parents.
Parents are Thyroid tested according to OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for
Animals) guidelines (the complete (8-way test) and test results are
registered with the OFA and can be looked up at OFFA.ORG ... please check
out the site for more information on Thyroid disease and testing in dogs.
(On the Left under, Disease Information) Why do we Thyroid Test our
Schipperkes? Because we think that part of being responsible breeders is
keeping ourselves informed on advances in the fields of dog health &
genetics and using available tests to carefully screen all breeding stock
to help us have the healthiest puppies possible. According to the latest
statistics about 14% of Schipperkes Thyroid tested had abnormal results...
that's 14% ... Thyroid problems can lead to all kinds of Skin, Coat, and
autoimmune problems. Autoimmune thyroiditis is the most common cause of
primary hypothyroidism in dogs, and autoantibody formation (one of the
things looked "for" in the comprehensive Thyroid test), usually occurs
BEFORE the dog has clinical signs of thyroid problems... In other words,
if a breeder tests their breeding dogs, they will know, probably YEARS
before the dog actually shows signs of the disease, that it has the
disease ... Development of autoantibodies at any time in a dog’s life most
likely means the dog has the genetic form of the disease. So testing helps
us guard against breeding dogs that will have future thyroid and
auto-immune disorders... and from producing puppies that will have a
higher chance of having Thyroid problems because their parents did.
Also, according to one published study over 70% of dogs with seizures had
abnormal thyroid results..Please note we respond to all emails, so if you
do not hear back from us, please check your spam settings or give us a
call. |
