Additional information: Now with Pinky Byrd we really did start out with a
pink nose but that too has changed. The nose has
darkened considerably to at least a light
brown. Pinky also has the 'tricolor' coloring on
his color markings which gives him that certain
pizzazz. Life is getting boring in the little
birthing box and we are wondering about getting
out and about. I do find these little sons of the
shih tzu father precocious. When they were first
born I thought that they looked like little
bulldog puppies with such a flat nose. But father
is a shih tzu with one of those special shih tzu
'smunchy' faces...i.e. hardly any nose at all.
Personality is expected to be quite active and
interactive and maybe even a bit scrappy like dad.
Pinky is a bit smaller than his two sibs so
according to the chart he will be pushing it to
make it to 6 lbs. Now we are talking really small.
I think a more versatile weight is around 8-10
lbs., especially if one wants to train
for obedience and agility. This breed excels at
this and it is a fun sport. But Pinky will just be
satisfied with being a little rascal. Update
2/25/16: Pinky Byrd now weighs 6.5 lbs. He is a
stocky, sturdy guy shaped much like his shih tzu
father although his legs are a bit longer and his
nose also. The coloring of the coat is white with
very pale caramel areas that look almost pink. He
is a fun guy and loves to play and roughhouse. He
will be a real show stopper when he is out in
public. Update September 2016: I made the decision
not to neuter Pinky because he was simply the
sweetest puppy that I had ever met. And in
addition he is a fine specimen--a
beautiful malshi. He has this cream/golden coat, a
wonderful 'happy' face' and the patience of Job
when it comes to coping with the rowdy teenagers.
He is very interested in breeding although we have
not tried him it is quite clear that he is not
shy. Once again, it is with great regret that I
have to report that my health has sustained a
major hit and I am finding it difficult if not
impossible to give the care and attention to the
doggies that I want to give. That is why we are
now engaged in a serious downsizing. Even though I
wanted to keep Pinky for breeding, I have had
to give up that plan. So now we have a gorgeous
young malshi male looking for a new home of his
own. He would be an amazing pet and would love
children. I would advise a new owner to consider
neutering. He is partially house trained but this
environment with all of the producing females
close by really interferes with proper toilet
training. In spite of that he does very well. He
would do well with a small exercise area out side
for toileting and fresh air.. Pinky just wants to
be loved and his smile just charms you.
