We are expecting puppies from AKC Champion and
Health Tested Parents.
Schips are Eye tested
according to CERF (Canine Eye Registry
Foundation)
guidelines and test results are
registered with CERF and can be looked up
at
http://www.vmdb.org/cerf.html ... please check out
the site for more
information on Eye diseases in
dogs. Why do we check our schips' eyes?
Because
we think that part of being responsible breeders
is keeping
ourselves informed on advances in the
fields of dog health & genetics and
using
available tests to carefully screen all breeding
stock to help us
have the healthiest puppies
possible. Again, we would rather be safe
than
sorry ... According to statistics over the
last ten years, over 20% of
Schipperkes have some
eye abnormality ... that's 20% .... Eye
diseases
known to be hereditary in dogs that have
been found in Schipperkes
include; PRA
(Progressive Retinal Atrophy), Retinal
Dysplasia,
Distichiasis, Cataracts, and PPMs to
name a few. In fact, over 10% of
Schipperkes have
Cataracts. So why do we test our breeding dogs?
...
again, many eye diseases can be found in a
CERF exam YEARS before they
will be noticable as
vision loss or vision problems in the dog itself.
For instance, a dog with PRA is often 7 or 8
before it is blind, yet PRA
can often be picked up
in a CERF exam when the dog is only 2 or 3...
Please note also, that only Veterinary
Ophthalmologists can do CERF exams
(a general vet
does not have the specialized equipment
neccesary). So,
again, a puppy whose parents have
been CERFed has a much greater chance of
not
